Nawanshahr, Administrative center in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district, India
Nawanshahr is a town in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district in Punjab state, located approximately 92 kilometers from Chandigarh. The settlement sits in relatively flat terrain at a moderate elevation, surrounded by agricultural areas with roads linking it to neighboring towns.
The town came into being when residents from Rahon moved to an area near the Sutlej River and named their new settlement Nawanshahr, meaning new city in the Punjabi language. The district was renamed to Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar in 2008 to honor a freedom fighter who left a mark on the region's history.
The town center draws people who do their daily shopping and socializing in the bustling bazaars where merchants sell everything from textiles to fresh produce. Life here follows the rhythm of the seasons and local festivals that bring the community together throughout the year.
The town is connected by railway at Nawanshahr Doaba Junction, and regional buses provide regular links to surrounding areas. Visitors will find it easiest to navigate by hiring local transport for exploring beyond the main streets.
Many residents work and live abroad, sending money back to support the local economy in significant ways. This international connection shows in the everyday fabric of the town through businesses and homes run by families with members overseas.
