Godavari Bridge, Truss bridge in Rajahmundry, India
Godavari Bridge is a truss bridge in Rajahmundry that crosses the Godavari River over a length of nearly three kilometers. The structure comprises 27 steel arch spans arranged across the wide river valley, carrying two road lanes and one railway track.
Construction started in the early 1970s under the direction of Braithwaite, Burn & Jessop Construction Company. Completion followed in August 1974, after the steel spans were erected across the wide delta reach of the river.
The bridge spans the Godavari, one of the longest rivers in southern India, which provides water and fertile silt to millions of people. Across its road lanes and rail track, travelers, traders and commuters move daily between districts along the river.
The bridge is open for both road and rail traffic, with trains and vehicles using the crossing simultaneously. Those experiencing the passage from the road side can observe the wide river course and delta landscape on either side.
At the time of its opening, this structure held the record as the longest combined road and rail bridge in Asia. The engineers used 27 identical steel truss sections to enable what was then a challenging crossing of the wide delta stretch.
