Papikonda Wildlife Sanctuary, Wildlife sanctuary in Eastern Ghats, India
Papikonda Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area in the Eastern Ghats of Andhra Pradesh, near the course of the Godavari. Hills, forested valleys, and riverbanks form a mosaic of habitats where many animal species find shelter.
The area was founded to protect the region's threatened wildlife and plants from logging and poaching. Over the years, programs were developed to respect the way of life of resident tribes at the same time.
The name Papikonda comes from the hills rising along the river, long regarded with respect by local communities. Villages nearby celebrate seasonal festivals where they give thanks for the protection of forests and animals.
The best time to visit is between October and March, when temperatures are more comfortable and many animals become active. Some paths run through denser forest, so sturdy shoes and binoculars help with wildlife watching.
Among the mammals living here are leopards, Asian elephants, and several deer species, often seen near waterways in early morning hours. Over 150 bird species use the area for breeding or resting, including rare ones that draw birdwatchers from afar.
