Ram Niwas Garden, Public garden in Jaipur, India
Ram Niwas Garden is a large public garden in central Jaipur with open lawns, fountains, and flower beds arranged across several distinct sections. The grounds also contain a museum, an open-air theatre, and an animal enclosure, making it one of the more varied green spaces in the city.
A Maharaja commissioned the garden in the second half of the 19th century as a way to provide work and income to people affected by a severe famine. The layout was designed by a British engineer, and the basic structure he created is still visible today.
A open-air theatre inside the grounds hosts classical Indian dance and music performances that locals attend regularly. Watching a show here gives a sense of how the performing arts remain part of everyday life in Jaipur.
The grounds are mostly flat and easy to walk, but comfortable shoes are recommended as several sections are spread out over a large area. Visiting early in the morning or in the late afternoon makes the heat much more manageable.
The zoo within the garden grounds is among the oldest in the country, dating back to the same period as the garden itself. Having a zoo tucked inside a city garden from that era is an arrangement that rarely survived into the present day elsewhere in India.
