Mallikarjuna Temple, Hindu temple in Srisailam, India
Mallikarjuna is a Hindu temple in Srisailam mandal, India, rising on a hill above the Krishna River. The complex spreads across several courtyards connected by tall entrance towers with elaborate carvings.
The site was founded in the second century and later expanded by several ruling dynasties. The Chalukyas and Kakatiyas added new halls and towers that remain today.
The name Mallikarjuna combines two names: Mallikarjun, a form of Shiva, and Bhramaramba, a form of the goddess. Pilgrims come here to worship both deities, giving the site a dual meaning.
Visitors should arrive early in the morning to experience ceremonies and avoid lines. The walk through the various courtyards can take some time, so comfortable footwear is recommended.
Near the main shrine, a natural humming sound resembles the buzz of bees. This sound gave the goddess Bhramaramba her name, as Bhramara means bee.
