Srisailam, Census town in Nandyal district, India
Srisailam is a settlement in Nandyal district within Andhra Pradesh, spreading over hills and surrounded by dense forest. Streets lead to several religious buildings and residential quarters that group around the central temple grounds.
The settlement grew as a pilgrimage site for the Mallikarjuna shrine, which was expanded during the Vijayanagara Empire. Later rulers added structures and reinforced its role as a spiritual center.
The town takes its name from the deity Shri Mallikarjuna and draws pilgrims who often walk barefoot through temple lanes. Many visitors join daily prayer rituals and buy small offerings at stalls along the pathways.
Buses connect the site with larger towns in the region, while the approach follows winding hill roads. The best visiting period falls between October and February, when temperatures are more comfortable.
The Krishna River flows through a narrow gorge below the settlement and forms the second-largest hydropower project in the country. Visitors sometimes spot wildlife such as leopards and bears in the surrounding forests.
