Belum Caves, Limestone caves in Nandyal district, India

Belum Caves forms an underground limestone cave system extending over three kilometers, composed of several connected galleries and chambers. The cave displays numerous formations created by mineral-rich water dripping slowly over thousands of years, with stalactites hanging from the ceiling and stalagmites rising from the floor, alongside natural columns where the two meet.

The cave formed millions of years ago through the gradual dissolution of limestone by underground water and was rediscovered by local inhabitants in the 16th century. Later, researchers found evidence that Buddhist monks used the chambers as retreats for centuries, as shown by inscriptions carved into the rock.

Local communities maintain legends about the caves, including stories of Buddhist monks who utilized specific chambers for meditation practices.

The temperature inside the cave remains around 15 degrees Celsius (59 degrees Fahrenheit) throughout the year, so bringing a light jacket or sweater is advisable. Sturdy shoes with non-slip soles are recommended, as some sections of the pathway can be damp and uneven.

One chamber named Simhadwaram gets its name from a rock formation resembling a reclining lion that stands at the entrance to the main hall. Visitors also notice that certain areas of the cave produce a clear echo when speaking or clapping, due to their shape and stone composition.
