Bhongir Fort, Hill fort in Bhongir, India
Bhongir Fort is a fortification built on a granite rock in Bhongir, India, rising above the surrounding plain. The complex includes several levels with stone structures, gates, and pathways spread across the entire surface of the rock.
Rulers of the Chalukya dynasty founded the fortress in the 10th century as a military base. Later dynasties took over the site and used it to defend their territories in the region.
The name comes from Telugu and refers to the rock that towers over the town. Visitors see the old walls today as part of the landscape, and locals use the surrounding area for walks in the late afternoon.
The climb follows steep stone steps that require steady footing. Early morning hours offer cooler temperatures and better conditions for ascending the rock.
Stone basins carved into the rock collect rainwater and store it for dry months. This system of multiple reservoirs helped the garrison survive for months without external supplies.
