Kulpakji, Jain temple in Alair Mandal, India.
Kulpakji is a Jain temple in Kolanupaka, within the Alair Mandal district, about 70 kilometers (43 miles) from Hyderabad in India. The outer walls carry detailed stone carvings showing traditional architectural elements and religious motifs.
The temple dates to around the 2nd century during the Mauryan Empire and is considered one of the earliest Jain worship sites in South India. Its foundations have been renewed over the centuries while its religious function remained.
The temple shelters a white marble figure of Lord Adinatha, the first Tirthankara, and pilgrims gather here throughout the year to take part in ceremonies and rituals that honor this founder of the Jain faith.
The temple opens during regular hours and guides are available to explain the architectural and religious elements to visitors. Watch for uneven floor surfaces and wear appropriate clothing for entering the temple.
Builders used precisely cut stone blocks that fit together without mortar, showing an ancient Indian building technique. This method demonstrates the craft skill and understanding of weight distribution from early centuries.
