Bhadrakali Temple, Hindu temple in Warangal, India
Bhadrakali Temple is a Hindu temple on the edge of Bhadrakali Lake in Warangal district, built from grey stone with a pyramid-shaped spire and narrow entry steps. The interior holds a main hall with carved pillars leading to a smaller shrine chamber where a multi-armed goddess sits on a pedestal.
A Chalukya ruler in the 8th century commissioned this temple complex to honor the goddess after winning a battle in the region. Later dynasties in the 12th and 13th centuries added further sections and repaired the outer walls following raids from the north.
The lakeside location draws worshippers who gather for ceremonies and perform ritual bathing in the shallow water before climbing the steps. Many visit the building on Fridays and during the new moon, when priests offer additional prayers and distribute incense and coconut offerings.
Access is through stone steps rising from the lakeshore, and a small antechamber provides shade and a place to remove footwear before entering the inner area. Visitors should plan for morning or late afternoon hours for quieter exploration, as midday sun heat builds on the open grounds.
The sculpture inside displays eight arms, each holding different objects including a small drum and a curved sword. This carved lotus beneath the figure shows petals extending around the entire base, forming a circular floor plan when viewed from the entrance.
