Ravangla is a settlement on terraced slopes at 2100 meters elevation in Namchi district. The houses spread between forests and fields along several roads that wind through the hills.
Buddhist monasteries appeared here in the 18th century as spiritual centers for pilgrims from the region. The settlement grew later around these places of worship and became a stop for travelers passing through Sikkim.
Handwoven textiles and wood carvings are made in small workshops around the central market area. Families from three ethnic groups live here together and maintain their own languages and dishes in the tea houses along the main street.
Connections from Gangtok lead here over a 78 kilometer route that winds through several valleys. The road remains open throughout the year, though fog and rain can limit visibility during summer.
A huge Buddha figure measuring 40 meters in height stands on a hill outside the town and towers over the surrounding landscape. The base contains rooms with wall paintings showing scenes from the life of Buddha.
