Norbugang Chorten

Norbugang Chorten is a white stone structure topped with a golden spire, located within a park. The complex includes a prayer hall, a large prayer wheel, and additional buildings arranged to support meditation and worship.

This site was the location of the 1642 coronation of Sikkim's first ruler following a 21-day consecration ceremony. The event marked the establishment of royal authority and united Buddhist practice with the founding of the state.

The site bears a ruler's name and shows how Buddhist traditions connect with Sikkim's royal past. Local communities continue to visit the shrine as a place of spiritual reverence today.

The site is best reached from the nearby town of Yuksom, which serves as a good base for exploring other Buddhist monuments in the region. The grounds are open to visitors who can move freely through the various structures at their own pace.

A time capsule was buried beneath the structure during its founding, containing gifts from the local Lepcha and Magar communities. This hidden layer of history reminds visitors that the founding ceremony brought together people from different backgrounds.
