Subarnarekha River, Major river system in Odisha, Jharkhand and West Bengal, India
The Subarnarekha is a river with a length of 395 kilometers that originates in Ranchi District and flows through northeastern India before entering the Bay of Bengal at Kirtania. Its drainage basin covers 29,196 square kilometers and crosses the states of Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha.
Gold mining at the source shaped the development of the area in earlier centuries. From 1982 onward, dams and barrages were built as part of a project for water supply and power generation.
The name refers to gold deposits from past times and translates as streak of gold. Along the banks, fishing communities and farms continue to shape daily life in the region.
Infrastructure along the course includes irrigation systems and hydroelectric plants in operation since the early 1980s. Access to the banks is possible at several points, particularly where settlements lie along the route.
The Hundru Falls form where the river plunges 98 meters downward. This drop ranks among the largest natural descents in northeastern India.
