Mahur, Religious town in Nanded district, India
Mahur is a settlement in Nanded district spread across three hilltops with several temple complexes, including the Renuka Mahar Devi Temple. Narrow lanes and wide staircases connect the hills to residential quarters in the valley, where shops and pilgrim lodges line the streets.
During the twelfth century, Appasaheb Deshmukh governed the area and established a local dynasty. His descendants remained in the region for generations, keeping ties to the temples and administration.
The name derives from Mahurgad, the fort on the hill above the temples. Visitors follow pilgrims up stone steps to shrines where oil lamps are lit and flowers laid during festival days.
Buses run regularly from Maharashtra State Transport to larger cities, with Nanded serving as the nearest hub. Roads leading to the town center are paved, though some paths to upper temples remain accessible only on foot.
The rivers Penganga and Pus meet at Hiwara Sangam, a few kilometers away. Penganga forms the natural boundary between Vidarbha and Marathwada, flowing through flat land before joining.
