Hemavati River, Major river tributary in Karnataka, India.
The Hemavati River is a major tributary of the Kaveri in Karnataka that flows through Hassan and Mandya districts. It travels roughly 245 kilometers across the landscape before merging with the Kaveri near Krishnarajasagara.
The Gorur Dam was constructed across the river in 1979 to create a reservoir for irrigation in the surrounding region. This dam project transformed how water flowed through the landscape and changed land use across the area.
The Gothic-style Shettihalli Rosary Church, constructed by French missionaries in 1860, now stands partially submerged by the Hemavati River waters.
The river is best visited during the monsoon season when water levels are high and the surrounding landscape is lush and full. In drier months, water levels drop considerably, though this opens up different ways to explore the area.
The reservoir holds the partially submerged Shettihalli Church, a Gothic-style building from the 1800s that becomes visible when water levels recede. This architectural ruin surrounded by water stands as an unusual reminder of the colonial past.
