Varanasi Junction railway station, Railway station in Varanasi, India
Varanasi Junction is a railway station in Varanasi, India, handling hundreds of thousands of passengers daily across eleven platforms. The facility connects several railway zones and manages traffic toward all parts of the country.
The railway connection reached the city in 1862 from Howrah. The junction opened ten years later and further lines followed in the decades after.
The terminal brings travelers to the sacred steps along the Ganges, where worshippers perform their rituals each morning. Arriving passengers often hear temple bells from the old town even while standing on the platforms.
Travelers find water dispensers, escalators, elevators, waiting areas, food stalls, and luggage storage throughout the building. Wheelchair assistance is available and most areas are accessible without steps.
Solar panels on the roof generate 600 kilowatts of energy and cover part of the daily electricity needs of the facility. The panels were installed to make operations more environmentally friendly.
