St Joseph's Cathedral, Roman Catholic cathedral in Gunfoundry, Hyderabad, India
St Joseph's Cathedral is a Roman Catholic place of worship in Gunfoundry featuring Italian architectural elements with a central hall seating approximately 500 people. Two distinctive bell towers frame the front of the building.
Construction began in 1869 under Fr Antonio Tagliabue and reached completion in 1872 under Fr Luigi Malbreti's supervision. This early establishment made it an important religious center for the community at that time.
The cathedral houses the tombs of three important priests and displays a reproduction of Michelangelo's Pietà. These religious works shape the interior space and invite visitors to quiet prayer.
The place of worship is open daily to visitors, and services are held in the morning and evening in English. Additional services occur on Sundays and religious holidays, so checking the schedule beforehand is helpful.
Five large bells imported from Italy in 1892 still function in the towers and ring out in musical compositions. These historic bronze bells also play the Ave Maria hymn.
