Vellode Birds Sanctuary, Protected area in Erode district, India
Vellode Birds Sanctuary is a protected area in the Erode district of Tamil Nadu, India, centered on a large lake surrounded by open land, acacia trees, and rice fields. A watchtower and a small interpretation center are available on site for visitors.
The sanctuary was officially designated in 1997 and has since been managed by local authorities. The lake and surrounding land had already served as a natural stopping point for migrating birds long before that.
The sanctuary is about 13 km from Erode city and can be reached by road, though vehicles are not allowed inside the grounds. Early morning and late afternoon are the best windows for spotting the most birds.
Some of the migratory birds that stop here travel all the way from Siberia and parts of Europe, making the lake a small but important point on a very long route. The fish in the lake are a key reason so many species return year after year.
