National Zoological Park Delhi, Zoo in Defence Colony Tehsil, Delhi, India
National Zoological Park Delhi is a zoo on 71 hectares near Purana Qila with dedicated areas for mammals, birds, reptiles, and nocturnal animals in naturalistic settings. The enclosures spread along paths between trees and lawns that provide shade and a calm atmosphere.
The facility opened in 1959 under the name Delhi Zoo. It was renamed National Zoological Park in 1982 to set new standards for animal care and research in Indian zoological gardens.
The facility displays native and exotic species in recreated habitats that educate school groups and families about biodiversity. Visitors can observe the White Tiger and the Asiatic Lion, both holding symbolic roles in Indian folklore and cultural heritage.
The park opens Monday through Thursday between 9 AM and 4 PM, with battery-operated vehicles available for transportation within the grounds. The paths are wide and level, but an early morning visit is advisable during hot weather.
The facility houses 1,350 animals from 130 species, including rare specimens such as white tigers and Asiatic lions. The reptile house also displays gharials, a crocodile species native to South Asia with a long narrow snout.
