Charaideo, human settlement in India
Charaideo is an ancient site with hemispherical burial mounds called moidams, situated in the foothills of the Patkai Ranges and serving as resting places for Ahom rulers from the 13th to 19th centuries. These structures, built from brick, stone, or earth with hollow vaults inside, vary in size to reflect the status of those buried, and are arranged across green hills alongside sacred trees, water bodies, and low brick walls that guide visitors through the landscape.
Charaideo was established in the 13th century by Sukaphaa, a Tai prince from Yunnan in China, who founded the first capital here and named it for a shining city on the hills. The site became the burial ground for Ahom rulers and remained a center for ceremonial practices and ancestor veneration for over six centuries, even after the capital moved elsewhere.
Charaideo is a place where the Ahom community maintains its connection to ancestors through the annual Me-Dam-Me-Phi festival, when food, rice beer, and betel nut are offered at the mounds to honor their departed rulers. These customs remain visible in how local people gather at the site to recite prayers and call for blessings, keeping the spiritual link between past and present alive.
The site is best explored on foot by following the marked pathways and low brick walls that guide you through the green hills and between the burial mounds. The area is open and accessible for families and groups, though visitors should move respectfully around the sacred trees and water bodies, and care should be taken to avoid damaging the historic structures.
Many of the moidams contain chamber systems that buried not only human remains but also animal remains like horses and elephants, suggesting that departed rulers were meant to be accompanied by these creatures in the afterlife. This practice reflects a distinctive belief system about death and the journey beyond that sets the site apart from burial traditions elsewhere.
