Charaideo district, Administrative district in Upper Assam, India
Charaideo is an administrative district in Upper Assam with rolling terrain and scattered settlements. Tea estates and villages form the main features of the landscape, with Sonari serving as the administrative center.
The name comes from Tai-Ahom words meaning 'shining city on hills' and dates back to the 13th century. It became an important center within the Ahom kingdom during this period.
The district is home to several ethnic communities who maintain their own traditions and languages in daily life. Local festivals and customs bring different groups together throughout the year.
Most visitors reach the area through the extensive road network connecting it to major cities. The best time to travel is outside the monsoon season when roads are more accessible.
The area contains Maidams, pyramid-like burial structures built on hillsides for Ahom royalty. These distinctive monuments are important archaeological remnants from the kingdom.
