Hastinapur Sanctuary, Wildlife sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh, India
The protected area spans 2,073 square kilometers across five districts, providing habitat for leopards, deer species, monkeys, and numerous bird varieties.
The sanctuary shares its name with the ancient capital of the Kuru kingdom mentioned in the Sanskrit epic Mahabharata from the 4th century BCE.
The conservation area integrates local communities in wildlife protection efforts while maintaining traditional ecological knowledge passed through generations.
Visitors can observe dolphins at four designated centers along the Ganges River: Makhdumpur, Sirjepur, Kunda, and Kharkhali.
The sanctuary contains a notable population of gharials, with over 400 individuals released under WWF supervision between Bijnor and Hastinapur sections.
