Kalchini community development block, Administrative development block in Alipurduar subdivision, India.
Kalchini is a community development block in the Alipurduar district of northern West Bengal, India, covering a collection of villages and tea estates set in flat lowland terrain. The block sits close to the Buxa Tiger Reserve, with forested land forming a visible backdrop to much of the area.
The block was set up as an administrative unit after Indian independence to organize and serve the villages in this part of the Dooars region. Before that, the land was largely shaped by tea estates established during the British colonial period in the 19th century.
In the markets and gathering spots of the block, Bengali, Hindi, and several local dialects are spoken side by side. Tea garden workers and farming communities share the same public spaces, giving daily life a layered, mixed quality.
Most parts of the block can be reached by road, though track conditions vary a lot during and after the monsoon season. Visiting between October and March makes getting around noticeably easier, and the forested areas near the reserve are more accessible in drier weather.
Kalchini is one of the few places where working tea estates sit directly alongside a tiger reserve buffer zone, creating an unusual mix of cultivated land and wild forest within a short distance. This contrast is visible from the roads that run between the plantations and the tree line.
