Kalyani Nagar, Urban residential district in east Pune, India
Kalyani Nagar is a residential neighborhood in east Pune, situated along the Mula-Mutha River with modern apartment blocks, office buildings, and tree-lined roads. The area has schools, medical clinics, and shopping centers spread across a grid of well-maintained streets.
The area grew out of a British military cantonment and takes its name from industrialist Neelkanth Kalyani, who set up his forging company here in the 1960s. After Indian independence, the zone gradually shifted from a military and industrial base into the residential and commercial district it is today.
Along the main roads of Kalyani Nagar, cafes and restaurants serving food from across India and beyond sit close together, drawing a mix of office workers and families. The neighborhood has a relaxed but busy daytime feel, with people moving between shops, eateries, and parks throughout the day.
The H. H. Aga Khan Bridge links this neighborhood to central Pune, and most daily facilities are within easy reach by road. A vehicle or local transport is the most comfortable way to get around, as the distances between points of interest are not practical on foot.
The Aga Khan Palace, located in the neighborhood, served as the place where Mahatma Gandhi was held under house arrest from 1942 to 1945, and it is now open to visitors as a memorial. Both his wife Kasturba and his secretary Mahadev Desai died here during that period, which gives the site a weight that goes beyond its architecture.
