Koodalmanikyam Temple, Hindu temple in Thrissur district, India
Koodalmanikyam sits in Thrissur district and is a Hindu temple with raised platforms, wooden roofs, and carved panels showing scenes from ancient narratives. The complex contains several smaller shrines around the central sanctum, surrounded by an open courtyard.
The shrine emerged over a thousand years ago and ranks among the oldest religious sites in Kerala dedicated to Lord Bharata. Later rulers expanded the grounds and added halls for ceremonies and gatherings.
The name combines "Koodal" for union and "Manikyam" for jewel, describing the assembly of divine qualities. Devotees walk clockwise around the shrine and participate in offerings of coconut and flowers.
Visitors should cover shoulders and knees and remove shoes before entering the inner areas. Morning hours before ten o'clock are quieter and better for exploring the grounds.
This is the only major shrine in India dedicated to Lord Bharata, who often stands in the shadow of his brother Rama. The sacred pond Kottakkal serves ritual washing and is surrounded by an ancient stone border.
