Mart Mariam Cathedral, Chaldean Syrian Cathedral in Thrissur, India
Mart Mariam Cathedral is a Chaldean Syrian church in Thrissur, Kerala, with a long central nave and a facade following traditional Syriac design. The interior carries decorative elements typical of Kerala church architecture, with a pronounced altar area and colored ornaments throughout.
The church was founded in 1814 by King Sakthan Thampuran to serve 52 Syrian Christian families who had come to Thrissur for trade. Over time, the congregation grew and the church became a center for the Syrian Christian community in the area.
The cathedral maintains Syriac Christian traditions through regular services and ceremonies that connect the local community to their religious heritage.
The cathedral is accessible on Sunday mornings during services, and visitors are generally welcome. It is worth contacting the church office before your visit to check current opening times and any ongoing events.
The church was originally called Our Lady of Sorrows and was the first Christian church built inside the fort walls of Thrissur. This location within the fortified heart of the city sets it apart from most other churches in Kerala, which were built outside urban centers.
