Our Lady of Lourdes Metropolitan Cathedral, Gothic Revival cathedral in Thrissur, India
Our Lady of Lourdes Metropolitan Cathedral is a Gothic Revival church in Thrissur, Kerala, with white spires and a facade that combines European and local architectural elements. The building has multiple levels and includes spaces for both communal services and private prayer.
The church was founded in 1875 as the first Syrian Catholic institution in Thrissur, then raised to cathedral status in 1891. It was elevated to a metropolitan see in 1995, marking a new chapter in its role within the wider church structure.
The cathedral is a center of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, one of the oldest Christian communities in India, whose roots are traced back to the apostolic era. Visitors can watch daily worshippers stop at the shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes, which draws pilgrims from across Kerala throughout the year.
The cathedral sits near the center of Thrissur and is easy to reach on foot from the main town area. Mornings tend to be quieter, while evenings draw more worshippers for regular services.
Below the main building lies an underground chapel consecrated in 1952, with a simpler design than the main nave above. It stays open to visitors and tends to be overlooked, yet it offers a very different experience from the cathedral's main interior.
