Melur taluk is an administrative division in northern Madurai district covering roughly 681 square kilometers. It contains 85 villages alongside some urban settlements and is home to around 291,000 people.
The area was originally called Naduvi Nadu before taking its present name Melur, which comes from Mela Nadu meaning assembly land. Over time it became a key administrative division of Tamil Nadu.
Most people here practice Hinduism and celebrate traditional festivals like Pookkuli, where participants walk across hot coals as a religious observance.
The area serves as the northern gateway to Madurai district and is reachable from the main city. Most facilities and services are centered in the smaller urban towns, while the surrounding territory remains mostly rural.
This region has earned a reputation for plough manufacturing, a traditional craft that remains active today, while also exporting granite to other parts of India. The industrial work runs alongside widespread farming activities that define the local economy.
