Pataleshwar Mandir, Hindu temple on Jadhua Road in Hajipur, India
Pataleshwar Mandir is a Hindu temple in Vaishali district, Bihar, built partly below ground level. The older underground section sits several meters beneath the surface and is reached by steep steps, while a newer structure above ground provides access and shelter to the ancient lower chamber.
The site is traditionally linked to the warrior Arjun from the Mahabharata, who is said to have meditated here during his exile. This association established the place as sacred, and the underground shrine is believed to date back to around the 8th century.
Carved stones with snake motifs dedicated to Shiva decorate the walls, and a Nandi statue stands at the entrance. Devotees come regularly to offer flowers and water, following rituals that have remained largely unchanged over generations.
The temple draws the largest crowds during the Shivratri festival, when waiting times at the entrance can be long. Good footwear with grip helps when descending the steep steps into the underground chamber, especially in humid conditions.
A local belief holds that the Shivlinga inside the temple grows a little taller each year during Shivratri, drawing visitors who come specifically to observe the stone. Because the shrine sits underground, the temperature inside stays noticeably cooler than at surface level throughout the year.
