Samadhi of Meher Baba, Sacred burial site in Meherabad, India
The Samadhi of Meher Baba is a marble tomb on Meherabad hill featuring religious symbols and a central dome. The inscription 'Mastery in Servitude' is placed beneath the dome and defines the space as a place of veneration.
In 1927 Meher Baba ordered the construction of a six-meter-deep pit beneath a small cabin. This location became his final resting place in 1969.
The site draws visitors from different faiths who gather for morning and evening prayers accompanied by traditional bhajans. These daily ceremonies shape how the place feels to those who spend time here.
The tomb is open daily from 6:00 AM to 7:45 PM, allowing visitors time to spend quietly. Accommodation and dining facilities are available on site with advance reservations.
After his death in 1969, the body showed no signs of decomposition for seven days, giving followers worldwide a chance to pay their respects. This event left a lasting impression on his devotees and remains part of their collective memory.
