Sangam World Centre, WAGGGS World Centre in Pune, India
Sangam World Centre is one of four WAGGGS World Centres, located on the bank of the Mula River in Pune, Maharashtra. The grounds include residential buildings, gardens, a swimming pool, and meeting spaces arranged across a riverside property.
The centre opened in 1966, inaugurated by Lady Olave Baden-Powell after Girl Guides and Girl Scouts around the world raised funds to build it. It was the first WAGGGS World Centre to open outside Europe.
The name "Sangam" comes from Sanskrit and means "confluence", reflecting the meeting of people from many countries in one place. Participants share daily life on the grounds, cook together, exchange traditions, and take part in programs designed around cooperation and leadership.
The grounds are easier to enjoy during the drier months, as the riverside setting can be affected by heavy rain during the monsoon season. The facility primarily hosts organized groups, so it is worth contacting the centre before planning a visit.
Sangam is the only one of the four WAGGGS World Centres located in Asia. The fundraising effort that made it possible involved Girl Guides and Girl Scouts from more than 50 countries, making it a genuinely collective project from the start.
