Sethani ghat, Religious ghat in Narmadapuram, India
Sethani ghat is a broad stone staircase along the Narmada River bank in Narmadapuram that provides direct access to the water. The structure extends across several wide steps descending into the river, accommodating both spiritual rituals and everyday use.
This site was built in the 19th century by Jankibai Sethani of the Sharma family to improve access to the river for residents. The ghat reflects how private funding created public spaces that served the entire community.
The steps host religious ceremonies and prayers, marked by chanting and the scent of incense that drifts across the water. Visitors come to wash in the sacred river and leave offerings, making it a focal point of spiritual practice today.
The site sits directly along the river and is easily reached on foot, with solid stone steps leading down to the water. Visiting in early morning hours works best, when fewer people are present and the light offers a more peaceful experience.
Visitors can watch as thousands of people set oil lamps floating on the river during major festival occasions, transforming the water into a glimmering display of lights. This happens in February and shows the deep connection the community holds with the sacred waters.
