St. Berchmans College, Syriac Catholic college in Kerala, India
St. Berchmans College is an arts and science institution in Changanassery, Kerala, founded in 1922 by local church leaders. Red brick buildings blend Dutch and Victorian architecture, featuring a chapel, lecture halls, laboratories, and a library with over 100,000 books spread across tree-lined grounds.
Founded in 1922 by Bishop Mar Thomas Kurialacherry, it was the first higher education institution of the Changanassery Archdiocese. The college moved to its current red brick building in 1925 and gradually expanded from a small school to a nationally recognized institution that gained autonomy in 2014.
The college's name honors St. John Berchmans, a Belgian saint from the late 1500s whose values of purity and dedication shape campus life today. Morning prayers and hymns like 'Lead Kindly Light' form part of the daily rhythm, creating a shared sense of purpose among students and teachers.
The campus is easily accessible from different parts of Kottayam and offers science labs, computer rooms, and a well-stocked library for hands-on learning. Visitors should plan their visit in early morning or late afternoon hours when the grounds are quieter and students move between classes.
A statue of Jesus brought from Spain stands atop the main tower and is visible across the campus, creating a distinctive landmark. The college has also served as a film location for several Indian movies, helping it gain recognition beyond the region as a symbol of learning and heritage.
