Kas Plateau Reserved Forest, Protected plateau in Maharashtra, India
The Kas Plateau is a highland area in Maharashtra that sits on volcanic rock at roughly 1200 meters in elevation. It supports many hundreds of flowering plants that grow across open spaces and rocky ground.
The highlands were declared a protected forest by the Maharashtra government in 1913. It later gained UNESCO World Heritage recognition in 2012.
The plateau holds importance for researchers and conservationists who visit regularly to study and protect plant diversity. Local communities have traditionally gathered medicinal plants and herbs from these lands for generations.
The best time to visit falls between August and September when wildflowers bloom and butterflies appear in large numbers. Warm clothing and waterproof gear are helpful since the plateau can be wet and windy.
Several hundred plant species are found nowhere else in the world and thrive only on this plateau. These botanical rarities were a key reason for the site gaining World Heritage status.
