Thoseghar Waterfalls, Waterfalls near Satara, India
Thoseghar Waterfalls is a multi-tiered waterfall near Satara in India that drops over steep rock faces within the dense greenery of the Western Ghats. The water falls across several levels and collects in pools between rock formations before continuing downward.
The falls formed through erosion over thousands of years as water slowly cut through the volcanic rock layers of the Western Ghats. The area gained recognition in the 20th century as travelers began visiting the landscape during monsoon season.
The name Thoseghar comes from the local language and refers to the plateau above where the water drops. During monsoon season families from nearby villages come to experience the power of the water and take photographs at the viewpoints.
The best time to visit is between June and September when monsoon rains increase the water volume. The path to viewing points can become slippery, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
During heavy rain the falls sometimes split into up to seven separate streams flowing side by side down the cliff face. On sunny afternoons rainbows often appear in the mist at the base of the falls.
