Rohida Fort, Mountain fort in Pune district, India
Rohida Fort is a stone fortress built with lime mortar and situated at 1,300 meters elevation in the Western Ghats. The structure features multiple defense towers, fortified walls, and ancient gateways that form its main defensive components.
The fort originated during the Yadava dynasty period and was later restored under Muhammad Adilshah's rule. It subsequently became part of the Maratha Empire's defensive network controlling the region.
The defense towers here reflect how people built military structures during medieval times to control the mountain passes. Walking around, you notice how each tower was positioned to watch different approaches and valleys below.
Two main routes lead to the fort: one through Bazarwadi village with bus access, and another via Chikhalavde passing through Venawadi and Shirwali. The cooler months offer the most comfortable conditions for the climb to the summit.
The fort earned its name Vichitragad because of three massive entrance gates built using specialized rock-filling techniques. These construction methods were rare and show how builders solved problems with the challenging mountain terrain.
