Torna Fort, Military fort in Pune district, India
Torna Fort is a hilltop fortification in Pune district, Maharashtra, sitting at 1403 meters above sea level. Stone walls, gates, and bastions spread across the rocky terrain, forming a defense system adapted to the steep topography.
In 1646, Shivaji Bhonsle captured this fortification at the age of 16, making it the first conquest on the path to founding the Maratha Empire. This early victory marked the start of a military campaign that reshaped the political landscape of western India.
The Menghai Devi shrine at the entrance draws pilgrims and trekkers who pause there before continuing upward. This devotion links the mountain landscape with spiritual practice, adding a layer beyond the military past.
The trek to the fortification requires sturdy footwear and enough water, as the climb follows steep paths. Access begins from Velhe village, and the site opens from sunrise until 5:00 PM.
From the highest point, visitors can spot five other fortifications at once: Raigad, Lingana, Rajgad, Purandar, and Sinhagad dot the mountain range. This line of sight once allowed communication between sites using fire signals and drums.
