Pune-Okayama Friendship Garden

The Pune-Okayama Friendship Garden is a Japanese garden spread across several hectares with natural water streams, stone lanterns, bridges, and pathways arranged according to traditional Japanese landscaping principles. The grounds combine classic Japanese garden techniques with local design elements to create a space for walking and exploration.

The garden was established in 2006 as a symbol of partnership between Pune and the Japanese city of Okayama. Japanese experts assisted in its construction and brought their knowledge of traditional garden design to the project.

The garden brings together Japanese design principles with local Indian garden traditions, creating a space where two different approaches to landscaping exist side by side. Visitors can observe how the stone lanterns and bridges sit alongside areas influenced by other regional garden styles.

The garden is easily accessible by public transportation and located on a well-connected road in the city. Visitors should bring comfortable walking shoes since the pathways cover a good distance and there is limited shade along the routes.

The water in the garden is home to colorful fish that visitors can observe from the central bridges while following the winding paths. These fish form an integral part of the landscape and offer quiet moments of observation.
