Parvati Hill, Temple complex on a hillock in Pune, India
Parvati Hill is a temple-topped hill in southern Pune accessible by roughly 100 stone steps that lead to multiple shrines at the summit. The site features five separate temples, with the main sanctuary built from black stone and topped with a golden spire.
The main temple was built in black stone by the Peshwa ruler Balaji Baji Rao during the mid-1700s, with a golden pinnacle added several years later. These construction efforts took place when the Maratha dynasty controlled the region and made Pune a major cultural center.
The hill holds five temples honoring different deities and serves as a center for Hindu worship and pilgrimage. Visitors can observe devotees performing rituals and prayers at these sacred sites throughout the day.
Wear sturdy footwear since the stairs are steep and can be slippery in wet conditions. The early morning or late afternoon visits are most comfortable, as the midday heat can be intense and crowds are lighter at these times.
A museum on the grounds displays weapons, coins, and artifacts from the Maratha period. This collection helps visitors understand the region's history beyond the site's religious significance.
