Rajgad Fort, Mountain fortress in Pune district, India.
Rajgad Fort is a mountain fortress in Pune district, India, sitting on Murumb Hill at 1,376 meters (4,514 feet) elevation. Three separate sections called Machis make up the complex, linked by fortified walls and gateways.
From 1647 to 1670, this fortress served as the capital of the Maratha Empire under Chhatrapati Shivaji. The seat of government later moved to Raigad Fort, after the empire's expansion demanded different strategic priorities.
The name means 'royal fortress' in Marathi, reflecting its role as the seat of power for over two decades. Pilgrims and hikers today share the paths that once carried soldiers and court officials.
The climb starts from Gunjavane or Pali villages and takes three to four hours. The trail includes steep sections, so sturdy footwear and enough water are recommended.
Several rock-carved water tanks supply the fort with fresh water throughout the year. These tanks allowed longer stays and contributed to the site's defensive capability.
