Hukitola

Hukitola is a limestone and stone building in Kendrapara with multiple spacious rooms and a distinctive veranda. It features nine large arches, three additional chambers, and solid architectural design that reflects colonial-era construction techniques.

The building was constructed in 1888 and served to store grain during a regional drought period. Its construction reused materials from an older fort, showing how colonial-era projects adapted local resources.

The building displays European Renaissance design with multicolored stones and reflects British colonial influence in coastal Odisha. The rooms and arches show a style that combines European aesthetics with local building traditions.

The site is best reached by boat from the nearest town, with the journey taking around one hour. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and check accessibility of the grounds and interior spaces in advance.

The building has four wells that collected rainwater, channeled through sloped roofs and iron pipes to supply occupants. This thoughtful water system was exceptional for a coastal structure and shows advanced understanding of sustainable living.
