Bihar Museum, Art museum in Patna, India
Bihar Museum is an art and history museum in Patna, India, spanning around 24,000 square meters (258,000 square feet) of built space and housing multiple galleries for art, archaeology, and local findings. The exhibition rooms are arranged so that visitors move chronologically through the history of the region.
The museum opened in August 2015 after four years of construction, replacing the old Patna Museum, which was over a century old and lacked sufficient space for the growing collection. The new facility was intended to offer a contemporary presentation of Bihar's historical holdings.
The permanent galleries display objects from the Maurya, Gupta, and Pala periods, offering insight into the development of Buddhism and Jainism in ancient Bihar. Visitors can view sculptures, coins, and manuscripts that illustrate the religious and artistic diversity of the region.
The museum is located on Bailey Road and opens from 10:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Adults pay 100 rupees for entry, and international visitors pay 500 rupees.
The architecture blends Japanese and Indian influences through collaboration between Maki & Associates from Tokyo and OPOLIS Architects from Mumbai. The building uses traditional elements like open courtyards and modern materials such as glass and concrete to connect light and space.
