Sher Shah Suri Masjid, Historical mosque in Patna, India.
Sher Shah Suri Masjid is a stone mosque in Patna, in the Indian state of Bihar. It has a large central dome flanked by four smaller domes, with walls and arches built from the same local stone throughout.
The mosque was built in the first half of the 16th century under Sher Shah Suri, a ruler who controlled a large part of northern India at the time. This period saw stone mosques become more common across the Bihar region.
The mosque carries the name of the ruler who built it and remains an active place of prayer today. Visitors walking through the prayer hall can observe carved Arabic script and geometric patterns on the walls and arches.
The mosque is open daily for prayers and can also be visited by non-worshippers, though modest dress is expected. Timing your visit outside of main prayer times allows for a calmer walk through the building.
Depending on where you stand outside, some of the five domes appear to disappear behind others, making the building look different from each angle. This effect is most noticeable when walking slowly around the outside of the mosque.
