Digha–Sonpur Bridge, Rail and road bridge in Bihar, India
The Digha-Sonpur Bridge stretches 4,556 meters (nearly 15,000 feet) across the Ganga River, linking Digha Ghat in Patna with Pahleja Ghat in Sonpur. The construction features 36 spans using Warren truss and double Warren truss as load-bearing structures.
Former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda laid the foundation stone in December 1996. Construction began in 2003 under Railway Minister Nitish Kumar and was completed after several years of intensive work.
The structure carries the name of independence activist Jayaprakash Narayan and serves as a vital link between northern and southern regions of Bihar. This naming honors his contribution to Indian history and society.
The crossing carries both railway tracks and road traffic, allowing vehicles and trains to pass simultaneously. Visitors can observe the structure during daylight hours, with views available from both riverbanks.
The crossing introduced India's second Roll-on/Roll-off service in May 2016, enabling trucks to be transported by rail across the Ganga. This approach reduces waiting times and improves cargo transport between both banks considerably.
