Bankapur Peacock Sanctuary, Bird sanctuary in Haveri District, Karnataka, India.
Bankapur Peacock Sanctuary is a protected reserve in Haveri District, Karnataka, spanning 139 acres with natural habitats shaped by deep trenches and raised mounds. The grounds include cultivated fodder areas that support the resident peafowl population year-round.
The sanctuary was established in 2006 and originated from land that once housed a cattle breeding farm built during the early 1900s. This agricultural heritage continues to influence how the grounds are managed today.
More than 1,000 peacocks and peahens roam freely in this protected area, displaying their natural behaviors across the 4-kilometer sanctuary grounds.
The sanctuary is best visited between October and April when observation conditions are most favorable. The nearest town with good transportation connections is Haveri, from which the site is easily accessible.
More than a thousand peacocks roam these grounds in near-total freedom, displaying their natural behaviors throughout the day. This large population represents one of the largest concentrated gatherings of these birds in the wild.
