Sula Vineyards, Vineyard estate in Nashik, India.
Sula Vineyards is a wine estate in Nashik, Maharashtra, producing red, white, sparkling, and dessert wines from international grape varieties. The property includes several vineyards on rolling hills, cellar buildings with stainless steel tanks and oak barrels, and tasting rooms overlooking the surrounding rows.
Rajeev Samant founded the estate in 1999 after learning how to grow and process wine with Kerry Damskey in California. Over the following two decades, the operation grew from a small experimental plot to one of the largest wine producers in India.
The name refers to a river source near the cultivation land, which has supported local farming for centuries. The terraces and cellars show a mix of traditional Indian building methods and modern production techniques from Europe.
Wine tastings run several times a day and last about an hour, with a guide leading visitors through the cellars and storage areas. Those who want to stay overnight can book one of the two resorts on the grounds, which offer restaurants and additional activities.
The property generates more than half of its energy needs through solar panels spread across rooftops and open areas. Bottles are now shipped to more than 30 countries worldwide, making the operation one of the few Indian wine exporters.
