Statue of Ahimsa

Statue of Ahimsa, Jain statue in Mangi-Tungi, Nashik district, India

Description

The Statue of Ahimsa is a marble sculpture representing Jain beliefs on the Mangi-Tungi hill in Nashik district, India. The figure rises roughly 33 meters above the ground and rests on its own pedestal, which adds to the overall height.

History

The idea for the monument emerged in 2002 at the initiative of Jain nun Gyanmati, who wanted to create a special pilgrimage site. Work continued for more than a decade and was completed in January 2016.

Culture

The figure shows Rishabhanatha in a meditative posture that symbolizes non-violence and self-restraint. Pilgrims from different parts of India come here to participate in religious ceremonies and experience the sacred atmosphere of the mountaintop.

Practical

Visitors can see the monument throughout the day without paying admission. Hotels in the surrounding area offer accommodation for travelers who want to spend more time in the region.

Did you know?

The entire body was carved from a single continuous block, which required extraordinary craftsmanship. The location at over 1,300 meters (4,265 feet) elevation means the figure can be seen from far away on clear days.
