Deolali transit camp, Military transit camp in Maharashtra, India
Deolali transit camp is a military complex in Maharashtra consisting of barracks, stone bungalows, and iron structures spread across a large area. Originally it functioned as a staging point for soldiers arriving in India or awaiting ships back to Britain.
Founded in 1861, the camp served the British Army as accommodation for arriving soldiers and those awaiting return transport. After independence in 1947, the Indian Army took over and converted it into an artillery training school.
The term "doolally" comes from this place and describes the mental strain soldiers felt while waiting in difficult conditions for long periods. The word entered English as an expression for confusion and disorientation.
The site is large and spread out, so allow time to explore, especially if you want to see different areas. Comfortable shoes are important since there is considerable walking involved, and it is wise to check access conditions beforehand.
During World War II, the camp had medical facilities with thousands of beds where diseases like malaria, smallpox, and influenza were treated. This medical infrastructure was crucial for supporting soldiers in harsh climate conditions.
