Deolali transit camp, Military transit camp in Maharashtra, India
The military facility spans over 2.5 kilometers in length and 1 kilometer in width, featuring barracks, stone bungalows, and iron structures.
Founded in 1861, the British Army used this camp to accommodate soldiers arriving in India and those waiting for ships returning to Britain.
The term Doolally originated from this camp, referring to mental distress caused by prolonged waiting periods in difficult conditions.
During World War II, the complex included medical facilities with 2000 beds, treating diseases like malaria, smallpox, and Spanish influenza.
The camp transformed into an Indian Army artillery school after 1947, hosting ten artillery and service corps units for military training.
