Padargad, Military fort in Raigad district, India

Padargad is a ruined fort in a mountainous region of Maharashtra that spans two distinct rock pinnacles with a plateau in between. The site shows remains of structures built into the rock formations and demands physical effort to traverse fully.

The site was built in a strategic location and later controlled by the Maratha Confederacy from 1739 until 1818. It then passed under the rule of the British East India Company before being abandoned.

The fort served as a strategic military lookout post during the Maratha period to observe movements through the Mawal region. Visitors can still trace the positions from which sentries once monitored the surrounding lands.

The route begins from the village of Khandas and continues with a steep, narrow climb to reach the summit. Visitors should bring sturdy footwear and water, as the path offers little shelter and demands physical fitness.

The site contains a natural chimney formation that requires visitors to climb through a steep vertical passage between parallel rock walls. This distinctive rock channel stands out as one of the most memorable features encountered during the trek.
