Bhorgiri Fort, Hilltop fort in Pune district, India
The stone fort rises 686 meters above sea level, with mountains on three sides and caves carved into the rock formations beneath its walls.
Built during the 9th century, the fort served as a defensive position to protect the Bhimashankar pilgrimage site and monitor trade routes in Maharashtra.
Two temples and multiple Shiva lingams stand within the fort's walls, maintaining its connection to Hindu religious practices through generations.
Visitors can reach the fort through a 30-minute trek from Bhorgiri village, located 95 kilometers from Pune via the Pune-Nashik Highway.
The fort contains natural caves that function as shelters, while its position offers views of the Sahyadri mountains and surrounding dam waters.
